Earwax Records

the Heatbeat of Atlanta Hip Hop

EarWax Records opened just in time for the 1993 Jack The Rapper Family  Affair and Freaknik. Founded by Brooklynites Jasz Smith, El Shabazz, and Queens native Talib Shabazz, the store brought the raw energy and foundational principles of New York Hip Hop to the South, just as Atlanta’s own cultural movement was rising. EarWax quickly became the city’s center of gravity for Hip Hop music.

More than a record store, EarWax was a creative hub and safehaven for artists, athletes, entertainers, and music lovers. Graffitiby artist Justice splashed across its walls, while a poster-filled storefront added color and rhythm to a quiet corner of Peachtree and 11th Streets. Serving DJs, producers, and collectors alike, EarWax helped revitalize Midtown Atlanta before closing its doors in early 2008.

Over its lifetime, the store became known for legendary in-store appearances, midnight releases, 2nd Saturday house parties, andan unmatched vinyl collection. For many, it was, and remains, theheart and soul of Atlanta’s Hip Hop legacy.

This exhibit explores EarWax Records as a physical space, a cultural moment, and a cornerstone in Atlanta’s music history.
