A 2024 REVOLT article titled “From Atlanta to NYC: 11 Best Hip Hop Cities That Redefined the Genre” ranked Atlanta #1.

Atlanta’s early Hip Hop history, especially its many “firsts,” remains largely undocumented. These pivotal moments unfolded before the internet could archive them, and much of the city’s creative legacy still lives in memory and word of mouth.

When it comes to claiming a “first” in Hip Hop, three things matter:
• Talk to the people who were there.
• Collect the documentation.
• Produce the receipts.

This exhibit highlights Atlanta’s pioneering Hip Hop artists, crews, and institutions, the ones who did it first. Together, they built the foundation that continues to define Atlanta’s creative power today.
